The reason I’m not as discouraged by the Hamdan decision released yesterday as many conservatives (although I am disgusted by it), is because the GOP is in power. There is little question in my mind that a bill will be passed giving Bush all the authority necessary, and it is plain the impact to Gitmo will be minimal. I realize I’m not the first to state it, but from a political matter alone, this decision is the type of thing that will keep the GOP in power this November.
And if you think I’m just politicizing a legal issue, take a close look at Nancy Pelosi’s response to the decision.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision reaffirms the American ideal that all are entitled to the basic guarantees of our justice system. This is a triumph for the rule of law.
“The rights of due process are among our most cherished liberties, and today’s decision is a rebuke of the Bush Administration’s detainee policies and a reminder of our responsibility to protect both the American people and our Constitutional rights. We cannot allow the values on which our country was founded to become a casualty in the war on terrorism.”
Pelosi and the liberals that are all “atwitter” after this decision will just never get it - America does not want al Qaeda and its operatives to have all the guarantees afforded to American citizens, and many probably just want them all dead without trials or anything of the sort. From now on, I think my response to every liberal that sends me some silly email about how pleased they are that Bush has finally been put in his place, will be to respond with a link to the gruesome videos depicting the way al Qaeda has handled its prisoners in this war.
Moments like this in our modern era should make every conservative proud of what they are and make liberals question why every one of their leaders that gets on TV is more concerned with smearing this in W’s face than they are with working on a bill to be sure W has the power he needs to wage this war.
