ABC News reports that officials have found the “smoking gun” that Iran is supporting and funding violence against coalition forces in Iraq.
U.S. officials say they have found smoking-gun evidence of Iranian support for terrorists in Iraq: brand-new weapons fresh from Iranian factories. According to a senior defense official, coalition forces have recently seized Iranian-made weapons and munitions that bear manufacturing dates in 2006.
This suggests, say the sources, that the material is going directly from Iranian factories to Shia militias, rather than taking a roundabout path through the black market. “There is no way this could be done without (Iranian) government approval,” says a senior official.
This news comes as no real surprise, and it’s been suspected for some time now that Iran was behind much of the weaponry and violence. What is surprising, however, is that even this news will do little to change the mindset of many that Iran is a changing country that truly seeks moderacy and peace in the Middle East, and is a country that we need on our side if we seek to win in Iraq. I guess that’s true in a sense, if the enemy joins your side they’re no longer your enemy. Idealism abounds.
